Periodic photography

I also enjoy taking pictures of bugs and plants as a beginner macro photographer. I currently have a standard Canon EOS Rebel T7 camera with 2 kit lens, as well as JJC extension tubes (12mm, 20mm, and 36mm). Note that I am not an etymologist, and have beginner plant identification skills west of the Mississippi, so any plant or bug identifications made below should be taken with caution and not as fact. I'd be more than happy to make edits if suggested!

I have some of my favorites here, as well as on a small Instagram page, @smolw.orlds

Taxiles Skipper (Poanes taxiles) and Western Tarnished Plant Bug (Lygus hesperus)

Snagged a photo of this skipper and tarnished plant bug on a yellow aster. It is super cool to see the iridescence on the skipper's back - very satisfying after so many blurry and emtpy shots of this flower. These photos were taken near the Mt. Lemmon summit trailhead on July 15, 2023. I used both 12mm and 20mm extension tubes with a 18-55mm Canon kit lens.

Small Milkweed Bug (Lygaeus kalmii)

There are what seems like hundreds of these guys on various plants in my yard. They stay very still, so they were honestly the perfect subjects to test out the extension tubes with. I used both 12mm and 36mm extension tubes with a 18-55mm kit lens.

Purslane Moth Caterpillar (Euscirrhopterus gloveri)

A few photos of the lovely hoard of these caterpillers during the 2022 monsoon seasoon in Tucson, AZ. I took these photos using a Canon T6i that I checked out from the University of Arizona Library.Â
